What Is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization — the practice of improving a website's visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results to drive more qualified traffic.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the practice of improving your website so it ranks higher in organic (non-paid) search engine results for the keywords and phrases your potential customers are searching for. When someone searches "IT company near me" or "managed IT services Tallahassee," SEO determines which businesses appear on the first page of Google — and the difference between ranking on page one and page two is enormous. The vast majority of clicks go to the first few results, and very few searchers ever scroll past the first page.

SEO encompasses three major areas: technical SEO, on-page SEO, and off-page SEO. Technical SEO ensures your website loads fast, works on mobile devices, is properly structured for search engine crawlers, and is free of errors. On-page SEO involves optimizing individual pages with relevant keywords in titles, headings, and content, along with meta descriptions that encourage clicks. Off-page SEO focuses on building your website's authority through backlinks (links from other reputable websites), local citations, and brand mentions across the web.

Unlike paid advertising, which stops generating traffic the moment you stop paying, SEO builds lasting visibility. A well-optimized page can rank on the first page of Google for years, driving consistent traffic without ongoing ad spend. However, SEO is a long-term investment — it typically takes 3-6 months to see measurable improvements, with the most significant results appearing after 6-12 months of consistent effort. For businesses in competitive markets, SEO is one of the highest-ROI marketing investments available.
