DNS, the Domain Name System, is the internet's phone book. When you type "epyontech.com" into your browser, your computer doesn't know where that website lives — it needs a numeric IP address (like 104.21.57.123) to connect. DNS handles this translation, converting the domain name you typed into the IP address your computer needs, all in milliseconds.
The DNS lookup process involves multiple servers working in sequence. Your request first goes to a recursive resolver (usually operated by your ISP or a service like Cloudflare or Google), which checks its cache. If the answer isn't cached, it queries the authoritative DNS servers for that domain — the servers designated by the domain owner to hold the definitive records for that domain. These records include A records (mapping domain to IP address), MX records (designating email servers), CNAME records (creating aliases), and TXT records (used for email authentication like SPF and DKIM).
For businesses, DNS management matters more than most people realize. Incorrect DNS records can take your website and email offline. Slow DNS providers add latency to every page load. Unsecured DNS is vulnerable to attacks like DNS hijacking (redirecting your traffic to malicious servers) and DNS spoofing (providing fake responses to DNS queries). Proper DNS management includes using reliable DNS providers with global anycast networks, implementing DNSSEC for authentication, and maintaining accurate records as your infrastructure changes.
